You get both natural beauty and a sense of history when visiting Georgia’s Jekyll Island. Once an enclave for wealthy families in the Gilded Age era, the island—a short drive from the mainland over the Causeway Bridge—is beloved for its wide beaches, golden marshlands, and live oaks. Today the island also has a restored Historic District. And there’s a Sea Turtle Center devoted to education, rehabilitation and research. Come for biking and kayaking, or just enjoy the island’s mellow pace. Here are the best hotels on Jekyll Island.

Jekyll Island Club Resort (371 Riverview Dr.; 912-319-4349) Jekyll Island

This grand dame resort first opened in 1888, hosting Vanderbilts and Rockefellers, and today Travel+Leisure describes it as “regal” and “the ultimate place to unwind during a visit to Jekyll Island. This massive yet intimate retreat has six dining venues, two pools, a beach, and sprawling grounds.” Onsite activities include a croquet lawn, bike rentals, pool and beach access, evening s’mores and easy access to three golf courses. “Keep in mind this is an extremely old hotel, but that is part of the charm,” writes a Google reviewer. “Stayed in a suite on the second floor and was pleasantly surprised how spacious it was.  This is a very special property—the atmosphere and ambiance alone is worth a stay.” >> Book this hotel for less

U.S. News & World Report writes that “each luxurious suite is ocean-facing with a spacious bedroom area, living room and furnished porches. The aesthetic is a mix of modern sophistication with beach chic.” Onsite, it boasts a pool, hot tub, and a fire pit; while some reviewers complain about the relative lack of amenities, a Tripadvisor user writes that “shuttle service to places around the island make it convenient. Plus, it is surrounded by plenty of natural beauty, and guests can participate in local nature tours or bike the 20 miles of paths around the island.” A Google reviewer says “the hotel was beautiful. The complimentary bikes, shuttle and beach chairs and umbrellas was an incredible value for the resort fee.
