Venice is home to 150 canals, 400 bridges, and more than a dozen squares, also known as piazzas and campos. One could argue that the heart of it all is Piazza San Marco, also known as Saint Mark’s Square—home to big sights such as St. Mark Basilica, Doge’s Palace, and The Bridge of Sighs. This popular area makes a convenient home base for exploring Venice—and here are five excellent hotels near Piazza San Marco.
The St. Regis Venice (P.za San Marco, 2159; 39-041-240-0001) San Marco
Located along the Grand Canal, west of St. Mark’s square, this St. Regis only opened in 2019 but still has plenty of classic grandeur, thanks in part to its collection of contemporary art and Venetian glass. Condé Nast Traveler calls it the “newly crowned queen” of the area’s luxury hotels, “boasting more water-facing balconies than any other.” A Google reviewer writes that the hotel “is immaculate and modern, but still has old school Italian charm. I cannot speak highly enough of the breakfast service. The spread is just as stunning as the views. The location was within easy walking distance to everything we wanted to see.” >> Book this hotel for less
Baglioni Hotel Luna (P.za San Marco, 1243; 39-041-965-5930)
This 68-room gem with its own private canal is the oldest hotel in Venice, dating to 1118. Its location “can’t be beaten—tucked literally around the corner from Piazza San Marco,” writes Condé Nast Traveler, and is “suitably resplendent with original Murano chandeliers, antique furniture, and silk brocade walls.” The hotel has three dining options, a spa, and easy access to tours, like ones focused on chocolate or glass. A Tripadvisor user writes that “this hotel checks all the boxes. A great location near St. Mark’s Square and direct water taxi service is a big plus.” >> Book this hotel for less
Hotel Flora (S. Marco, 2283/A; 39-041-520-5844) San Marco
Afar describes this 40-room hotel as “an ivy-clad 17th-century palazzo tucked down a narrow alleyway in San Marco. It’s hidden from the crowds, but still an easy stroll to the buzz of San Marco and the Grand Canal.” A Google reviewer writes that “we had an attractive room with vintage furniture, terrazzo floors and lovely rugs and the staff were kindly, knowledgeable, efficient and very charming. A perfect balance between attentive and relaxed. You could not ask for a better location from which to explore the city.” >> Book this hotel for less
Hotel Danieli (Riva degli Schiavoni, 4196; 39-041-522-6480) San Marco
“The gilded lobby, with its Murano glass chandeliers, pink marble columns, and stained-glass windows sets the opulent tone throughout,” writes Afar of this former palazzo that has been a hotel since 1822. Since it overlooks a waterfront promenade, the magazine says, it’s also “a prime people-watching spot.” The hotel has its own restaurant, bar, and a posh spot for afternoon tea. A Google reviewer writes that “the view on the roof top terrace is simply amazing. An iconic Italian hotel old school, very elegant. This kind of grandeur does not come cheap … but totally worth it.” >> Book this hotel for less
The Gritti Palace (Campo Santa Maria Del Giglio, 2467; 39-041-794-611) San Marco
You can’t have a conversation about hotels near Venice’s Piazza San Marco without considering the Gritti. Condé Nast Traveler declares that this 82-room member of Marriott’s Luxury Collection, with its own private jetty along the Grand Canal, “is luxury with a capital ‘L.’ It’s the best possible mix of old-school class with of-the-minute comforts … The Rubelli fabrics on walls and furniture positively glow, aided by dazzling chandeliers.” Amenities include cooking classes and a Sisley spa. A Tripadvisor user calls it a “truly five-star experience. The hotel welcomed us with complimentary champagne and oranges which was a delight after traveling. The water taxis can be a bit expensive but the concierge will pre-schedule and get the prices ahead of time for you.” >> Book this hotel for less
