The archipelago nation of Malta is comprised of six islands, but packs in a lot of culture and scenery. Staying on Malta’s namesake island, with its capital city Valletta, offers easy access to museums, cafes and walkable streets. Think baroque churches, golden-limestone buildings and the gorgeous blue Mediterranean as the backdrop. Indeed, the city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. While Valletta is home to many small inns, you will also find some larger hotels and European brands that offer a lot of amenities. Here are the best hotels in Valletta.

The Embassy Valletta Hotel (173 Strait St.; 356-2016-9000) Valletta

This 81-room hotel sits in the heart of Valletta and a Tripadvisor writes that it “was in a perfect place within the city walls. It lacked some of the finesse of a four-star superior hotel but staff is great and the bedroom perfect.” A Google reviewer writes that “the rooms are spacious, and we loved having breakfast up on the roof terrace overlooking Valletta. The hotel is in a perfect location to see all the sights, so you don’t have to walk far.” >> Book this hotel for less

Rosselli AX Privilege (167 Merchants St.; +356 2124 5245) Valletta

Housed in a 17th-century palazzo, this boutique hotel is part of the AX Hotels luxury collection. Forbes Travel Guide describes it as “classic Baroque architecture meets contemporary aesthetics—with opulent accents like bold wallpaper, colored marble and warm wood furnishings.” A Google reviewer calls it “a magical place. Talk about service and style. From the front desk to the restaurant staff to housekeeping we felt so very taken care of. If you prefer quiet rooms I recommend the back of the hotel, as the ones facing the street can get loud from the next-door bar crowd.” >> Book this hotel for less

The Phoenicia Malta (The Mall FRN1478; 356-2122-5241) Floriana

Forbes Travel Guide calls this 132-room hotel—built from a 1939 estate just outside the old city walls—“an Art Deco beauty and Valletta’s grande dame of hotels” with “elegant but approachable colonial-chic interiors.” Live like an aristocrat while enjoying the garden-to-table restaurant, infinity pool, and the spa with a sauna, steam room and salt room. A Google reviewer likes that the “hotel sits next to the Triton Fountain, with easy access to buses or taxis, and it’s a pleasant 5-minute walk to St. John’s Cathedral. You couldn’t ask for a more convenient base in Valletta. Truly five-star.” >> Book this hotel for less

Grand Hotel Excelsior Malta (Great Siege Road, FRN 1810; 356-2125-0520) Floriana

This 433-room, harborfront hotel sits right outside the city center but has its own beach and the resort-style amenities of pools and onsite spa. A Tripadvisor likes the “fantastic room with a complimentary bottle of wine and a lovely note. Our room was large with a great view. Walking distance to Valletta, although they have a free shuttle that will take you. We decided to eat in at night since there are not a lot of restaurants nearby.” A Google reviewer likes call it “a beautiful hotel. Spending our late evenings on the balcony was a real highlight.” >> Book this hotel for less

Hilton Malta (Vjal Portomaso; 356-2138-3383) St. Julians

If you want a brand-name hotel, you can stay about 15 minutes by car, or five minutes by ferry, at this Hilton in the town of St. Julians. “Located on the northeastern coast, this Hilton outpost offers friendly staff members, delicious cuisine and phenomenal Mediterranean Sea vistas,” writes U.S. News & World Report. Big-hotel amenities include three pools (one for kids), tennis courts and a spa. Online reviewers point out the beach is pretty rocky but a Google reviewer calls it “one of the best Hilton hotels I have ever experienced—the best customer service.
