Maine’s largest city offers a big dose of charm. Historic Portland has earned fans for its thriving dining scene and variety of local craft beer. The Old Port section of town is most well-known for inns and hotels. But you can also find excellent places to stay in the West End, or even just outside town. Here are five hotels in Portland, Maine that exude the city’s spirit.

The Press Hotel, Autograph Collection (119 Exchange St.; 207-808-8800) Old Port

Looking for hotels in Portland, Maine with character? This member of Marriott’s Autograph Collection has a cool back story. It used to be the headquarters of the Portland Press Herald, and today the decor includes vintage typewriters, type-covered wallpaper, and a bar called Inkwell. “Rooms look like modern writers’ studies, with sumptuous leathers, vintage desks and textiles from local artist Angela Adams,” says Condé Nast Traveler. “And the hotel’s restaurant, Union, is one of the city’s best.” Free bicycle rentals is just one perk. “You can see the City Hall right outside and there are tons of shops and restaurants within few minutes of walking. The overall vibe is almost like a urban resort.”   >> Book this hotel for less

Portland Harbor Hotel (468 Fore St.; 207-775-9090) Old Port

You can walk almost anywhere in the Old Port from this 95-room hotel—or borrow a hotel bicycle to pedal around. The nautically themed rooms have wooden floors and a fresh contemporary décor. Some Google reviewers say the rooms feel a little small for the price. “Rooms were small and there was nowhere to put our clothes,” says one. “Just a tiny armoire. Overall—great location but overpriced.” Don’t miss the hotel’s main restaurant, BlueFin, says Forbes: “Chef Gil Plaster offers incorporates local seafood and ingredients into his dishes. Whether it’s breakfast, lunch, or dinner, guests will be able to dine like a true local.”   >> Book this hotel for less

Pomegranate Inn (49 Neal St.; 207-772-1006) West End

This tiny 8-room inn housed in an Italianate mansion is one of the most intimate hotels in Portland, Maine. The place is a visual feast of paintings, quirky furniture, and themed rooms such as the Matisse and the Hydrangea. “Common rooms are equally as dramatic,” says Travel + Leisure. “The foyer is checkered with large black and white marble tiles, and the parlor is an ideal place to savor a breakfast of Maine blueberry pancakes.” A recent refresh of the décor has pleased Google reviewers: “We stayed in Room 8, which was large, immaculate, and comfortably accommodated three people,” says one. “Breakfast had a large variety of delicious food, and there were cookies in the afternoon. Highly recommend!”   >> Book this hotel for less

Westin Portland Harborview (157 High St.; 207-775-5411) Arts District

This 289-room hotel in downtown’s vibrant Arts District used to be known as the Eastland Park Hotel, but got a major upgrade in 2013. That was when Westin added a spa, a WestinWORKOUT fitness center, and a rooftop bar. “Rooms are spacious and minimalist, with some of the best views of the city, and all come with Westin’s signature Heavenly Bed,” says Condé Nast Traveler. It’s just not super convenient to walk to the Old Port, some reviewers point out . “The hotel is great (clean, modern, good beds, friendly staff) and the restaurant has an awesome view,” says one. “The location isn’t that great as it’s not in the center and for that reason the price is too high.”   >> Book this hotel for less

Inn by the Sea (40 Bowery Beach Rd.; 207-799-3134) Cape Elizabeth

For a seaside New England stay less than 10 miles from the city, consider this 61-room, five-acre resort on a mile of Crescent Beach. Condé Nast Traveler calls it “a stately hotel and an all-immersive escape” thanks to its “pristine lawn, dotted with Adirondack chairs…and it has one of the best spas in the state.” Tripadvisor users like that it feels removed, but not too removed. “Super cozy rooms, top notch service, and fantastic views of a secluded beach, just a short walk away,” says one. “An easy drive into Portland for some of the best restaurants and breweries in the world.”   >> Book this hotel for less
