Want to understand the scope and impact of the Civil War? Visiting Gettysburg—the site of the war’s turning point and the historic speech by President Lincoln—is a must. This National Military Park and National Cemetery in Pennsylvania can be explored by car, by foot, or even by Segway, while nearby downtown Gettysburg is rich with its own historic buildings and charming shops and restaurants. The best hotels in Gettysburg have proximity to the battlefield, nice amenities, and often their own sense of history.

The Federal Pointe Inn Gettysburg, Ascend Hotel Collection (75 Springs Ave.; 717-334-7800) Gettysburg

This boutique hotel in a restored 19th-century building is part of Choice Hotels. Amenities include an art gallery, a fitness center and a restaurant, and the hotel can help you book Gettysburg tours. “Fresh coffee/tea available in the morning, Keurig all day. Local paper left outside your room each morning,” writes a Tripadvisor user. “It is four short blocks from the circle—many restaurants and shops. It’s not within walking distance to the battleground—but it’s less than a 10-minute drive.” A Google reviewer loves the ambience: “I found myself transported to a bygone era. The rooms, though imbued with historical character, were impeccably clean and well-maintained, seamlessly blending the allure of the past with modern comforts.”    >> Book this hotel for less

Wyndham Gettysburg (95 Presidential Cir.; 717-339-0020) Gettysburg

Located five miles from the battlefield ns just northeast of downtown, this branch of the Wyndham is “set in a Federal-style building designed to reflect the area’s history,” writes US News and World Report. “On-site amenities include an indoor pool with a hot tub, a fitness center, a business center, a shuttle to downtown and an on-site movie theater.” One Tripadvisor user likes the “patriotic décor” while another notes the “gorgeous lobby, and ample and free parking. We were able to see a lot of the historic downtown because the drive was so quick and easy, under 10 minutes.”    >> Book this hotel for less

Gettysburg Hotel (1 Lincoln Sq.; 717-337-2000) Downtown Gettysburg

This 1797 hotel in downtown Gettysburg actually predates the Civil War and US News & World Report likes that it is “situated near many historic buildings, but its modern rooms feature free Wi-Fi and flat-screen TVs. Some even boast Jacuzzi tubs and gas fireplaces.” A Google reviewer writes that “the location simply couldn’t be beat, as there were restaurants and stores within steps. The Starbucks on the first floor was an added bonus. The view of the square was wonderful but the trade-off was the noise from the bar/street at 12 am.”

Best Western Gettysburg (301 Steinwehr Ave.; 717-334-1188) Gettysburg Battlefield Historic District

You’re walking distance from the battlefield at this Best Western that’s also less than a mile from downtown. “This hotel has an excellent location,” writes a Google reviewer. “Many restaurants and shops are within walking distance as well. The room was nice and clean.” The hotel has an indoor pool and the rate includes free breakfast in the “SkyBreakfast” room that gets raves from users. “This is a real gem,” writes a Tripadvisor user. “The breakfast offered is amazing—waffles, pancakes, eggs, sausage, juice, muffins, etc.—and a beautiful view of the Battlefield on the third floor.”    >> Book this hotel for less

Quality Inn Gettysburg Battlefield (380 Steinwehr Ave.; 717-334-1103) Gettysburg Battlefield Historic District

This 109-room Quality Inn is “an older classic American motel, but it is well maintained,” writes a Tripadvisor user. “On top of all of that, you cannot beat the location. It literally backs up to the Gettysburg National Cemetery and sits at the northern end of the battlefield. The Appalachian Brewing Company is across the street.” The hotel has an indoor and outdoor pool, plus free breakfast. While some online users complain about the dated décor, a Google reviewer likes that “restaurants and shops are within walking distance, and the Reliance Mine Saloon on premises was perfect for a night cap, with a great fireplace.”    >> Book this hotel for less
