Located just below the Canadian border, Glacier National Park lives up to its reputation for grand scenery and dramatic overlooks in Big Sky Country. Inside the park, the most sought-after rooms are at this “five-story Swiss-inspired resort hugging the shores of Swiftcurrent Lake,” according to Outside magazine. Open from late May through mid-September, this historic gem was built by the Great Northern Railway in 1915. The sweeping hotel still exudes rustic elegance. It contains 205 guestrooms, two suites and seven family rooms.
The Firebrand Hotel (650 E 3rd St.; 406-863-1900) Whitefish
“Amenities abound at this modern oasis situated in the heart of downtown Whitefish,” writes Condé Nast Traveler about this 86-room boutique hotel. “Guest rooms are standard hotel fare–clean neutrals, walk-in showers, and well-placed writing desks—but it’s the thoughtful extras, like free airport shuttles, a game library, on-site spa, and ski storage that are truly impressive.” A Tripadvisor user says “it’s a 45-minute drive to the west gate. This Best Western offers a free breakfast and an indoor pool and hot tub, 45 minutes from the park. “Great hotel convenient to Flathead Lake and Glacier National Park,” writes a Google user. “Nice hot breakfast and great cookies in the lobby! The only ‘complaint’ I have is that there is no good dining close to the hotel.” A Tripadvisor user likes that “the staff was very accommodating. The classic lodge on 28 acres is “inspired by the grand waterfront hotels of the past,” writes Travel+Leisure, and “combines breathtaking scenery with luxurious, family-friendly amenities.” Lodgings range from standard rooms to condos and full homes. Perks include pools, yoga classes and free evening s’mores; you can also borrow gear such as snowshoes, bikes, and canoes. Open between May and October, this 26-room, 1910 hotel is part of a small boutique chain specializing in national park locations. “It may not technically be located within Glacier National Park, but it’s pretty close—less than a mile from the park’s west entrance,” writes Travel+Leisure. It offers “world-class cuisine and modern, comfortable rooms that nod to the property’s historic roots.” Tripadvisor users like the easy access to the park but note the train station across the way can be noisy. One writes, “Given the historic nature of the building, expect small rooms (with small baths), and more noise than usual. Coffee and danish in the morning was appreciated, as were earplugs. You’re a 15-minute drive from the national park at this 1913 hotel in the village of East Glacier Park. Just be aware that it’s only open from mid-May to mid-September. The 161-room hotel “has retained its striking appearance and beautiful timbered lobby,” writes Travel+Leisure. “The rooms have hardwood floors—some with balconies—while the lodge boasts an outdoor pool, a nine-hole golf course, and a spa.” A Google reviewer says they “stayed here because it’s close to Glacier National Park, especially if you plan on visiting Two Medicine.
