When this stretch of downtown San Diego was first developed in the 1870s, it was considered to be on the cutting edge, thanks to modern gas lamps dotting the streets. Today, the Gaslamp Quarter still feels up to date, thanks to its hotbed of bars and restaurants. Staying here also gives you easy access to big landmarks such as the Convention Center and Petco Park. Here are five great hotels in San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter.
Andaz San Diego (600 F St.; 619- 849-1234) Gaslamp Quarter
This 159-room boutique hotel, part of the Hyatt brand, occupies a historic building that was erected for the 1913 World’s Fair. Today it feels “chic, modern, and filled with cool local art,” according to Fodor’s, which gives it props for its “rooftop that features a beautiful pool as well as a bar that’s seriously bumping on weekend nights.” Granted, that downtown party scene is not for everyone. “If you are more so looking to relax and wind down for a family outing then you may have better luck at other Hyatts,” says one Google reviewer who had sticker shock over the parking fees, but added that “the Andaz is walking distance to an abundance of establishments.” >> Book this hotel for less
Pendry San Diego (550 J St.; 619-738-7000) Gaslamp Quarter
Owned by the Montage line of hotels, “this bright, 12-story hotel opened in early 2017 and brought some much-needed modernity to the Gaslamp Quarter, a downtown neighborhood that veers on the kitschy, touristy side,” says Condé Nast Traveler. “The rooms feature lots of wood, whites, and metallic gold touches—like a West Elm catalog come to life.” Tripadvisor users love the calm ambience at the 317-room hotel, as well as the champagne vending machine in the lobby. “The pool with bar service and the fitness center were terrific! ” says one traveler. “Enjoyed the friendliness of the staff and felt safe with the valets watching the entrance. A quick Uber ride to the San Diego Zoo.” >> Book this hotel for less
THE US GRANT, a Luxury Collection Hotel (326 Broadway; 619-232-3121) Gaslamp Quarter
This 270-room hotel listed on the National Register of Historic Places has presidential street cred. It was built in 1910 by the son of Ulysses S. Grant and features one of the few existing portraits of President Grant. Today it’s part of the Marriott family, and “the 11-story historic building is downright regal,” says Condé Nast Traveler, “with sparkling chandeliers, glossy tile floors, Corinthian-style columns. Plus, the location is central to Balboa Park, buzzy restaurants in Little Italy, and the scenic bayfront.” One Google reviewer bemoaned the lack of perks. “The hotel is gorgeous, but unfortunately the only thing that is complementary is water and coffee. There is no parking. Only valet and it’s $50 a day.” >> Book this hotel for less
Omni San Diego Hotel (675 L St.; 619-231-6664) Gaslamp Quarter
Talk about being in the heart of the action. This 500-room high-rise Omni hotel has a sky deck that connects to Petco Park, home of the San Diego Padres. Plus, “the Omni’s unbeatable location means you’ll be close to San Diego’s most prominent attractions, like Balboa Park and the Horton Plaza shopping district,” says Travel+Leisure, adding that rooms “have either ocean, bay, or downtown skyline views … you’ll be hard-pressed to leave.” Travelers love the hotel’s convenience, but many found the rooms to be small. “Price for overnight parking is $55 and no options to self-park,” says one. “Rooms had two double beds (instead of queens) which always disappoints, and shower was curtain and tub instead of glass door walk-in. But you can easily walk to almost anywhere.” >> Book this hotel for less
Hard Rock Hotel San Diego (207 Fifth Ave.; 619-702-3000) Gaslamp Quarter
This outpost of the pop culture brand is a perfect fit in the Gaslamp, says Travel +Leisure: “Its rock vibe begins with the lobby lounge and continues through a stunning rooftop pool bar, fitness center, and high-tech amenities, like each room’s integrated plug and play sound system.” Online reviewers also liked the hotel’s service. “The music memorabilia around the hotel is pretty great,” says one Google reviewer, but “if pool parties, constant music, mini bars, and a party atmosphere aren’t your thing, maybe look elsewhere. Good news: the hotel staff did go out of their way to resolve an issue with my bill before I checked out.” >> Book this hotel for less
