What is it like to stay at a Fairmont Hotel?
In a Nutshell: A Fairmont hotel is the kind of luxury property that seems to define its location, rather than the other way around. When the company in the late 1800s, its first palatial hotels became destinations along the Canadian Pacific Railway. Notably, examples are Fairmont Banff Springs and Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise. In the decades since, Fairmonts have spread across 30 countries—with a penchant for grand-dame hotels in big cities and resort areas. Iconic Fairmont properties include The Plaza in New York City, The Fairmont San Francisco in addition to The Savoy in London.
In 2016, Fairmont Hotels was acquired by AccorHotels.
What to Expect: A Fairmont is often the standout hotel in any location. Expect a dramatic lobby and restaurants or bars that are their own destinations. In addition, Fairmont hotels outside of cities typically have golf courses or easy access to skiing. All Fairmonts tend to have meeting and banquet spaces, as well as sumptuous spas.
Design: In keeping with their status, Fairmonts tend to be a little formal, but always characteristic of their settings. Think magnificent mountain lodges in the Canadian Rockies, Spanish haciendas in Sonoma and palatial pomp in Quebec City.
Room categories: Basic rooms are called “Fairmont” rooms—standard rooms ranging from 200-400 square feet featuring one king or two queen beds. Common amenities include Nespresso machines, plush bathrobes, and Le Labo toiletries. Deluxe Rooms are one notch up, offering either a little more space or more picturesque views, perhaps from higher floors. Junior Suites and Suites (from 500–1,000+ square feet) offer separate living spaces. Gold level rooms of varying sizes are on the Gold level floor, with their own lounge and concierge.
Club Floor Upgrade: Fairmont properties often have a Fairmont Gold club level. This “hotel within a hotel” typically is a separate floor with its own concierge and lounge. Perks also include a complimentary continental breakfast, honor bar, and cocktail hour canapés.
Fun Facts: The Fairmont San Francisco was not quite finished when the great earthquake of 1906 hit—but the hotel survived and opened in 1907. John Lennon and Yoko Ono held their first famous Bed-In at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Montreal. Fairmont receives props for its sustainability initiatives. In 2015 it became the first hotel brand to reduce CO2 emissions by 20 percent, as part of the WWF Climate Savers Program.
