Adrift on Lake Huron, Michigan’s Mackinac Island (pronounced MACK-i-nah) oozes yesteryear charm, from its Victorian architecture to the irresistible fudge shops in the car-free town center (indeed, out-of-towners, most of whom arrive by ferry, are called “fudgies”). In keeping with the small-town vibe, there are no big brand name hotels. Look for smaller inns and lodges that combine creature comforts with personality. Here are the best hotels on Mackinac Island.

Grand Hotel (286 Grand Ave.; 906-847-3331) Mackinac Island

US News & World Report calls this 1887 hotel a “Mackinac Island mainstay” that “boasts the world’s longest front porch” at 660 feet, and a “long list of activities including golfing, biking, tennis and lawn games.” Online reviewers note that this grandeur comes at a price. But one Tripadvisor user writes that “it feels like you’re stepping back in time. We love the provided activities and pool for the kids.” Note that the hotel is only open from spring through fall. >> Book this hotel for less

A Google reviewer likes the “home away from home atmosphere” at this 45-room lakefront inn that has “quaint sitting areas, a fabulous restaurant and great location.” Another likes the “nice personal touches, like beverages, snacks, coffee, water and the restaurant.” One Tripadvisor reviewer raves that “the staff is friendly and efficient and it is within walking distance of restaurants and attractions. Luggage service from the ferry was fast and efficient.” >> Book this hotel for less

The Inn at Stonecliffe (8593 Cudahy Cir.; 906-847-3355) Mackinac Island

Travel+Leisure raves that this inn, set in a 1904 estate on the island’s west side, is “elegant” with “old-world charm,” balanced out by its recently renovated lodgings—51 guest rooms plus cottages with full kitchens. “The rooms are very spacious,” writes a Tripadvisor user who stayed in the Summer House. “You will not be bored, as they offer various activities throughout the day—crafts for kids, yard games, and a beautiful yard for the kids to just run and enjoy. A little ways out of town, but everything is very relaxed and quiet.” >> Book this hotel for less

“Excellent proximity to the bustle of town but far enough away to be quiet,” writes a Tripadvisor user about this 94-room hotel with an indoor pool and bicycle rentals. A Google reviewer likes the “central location. Whether you’re into biking, hiking, or simply strolling around the island’s streets, this hotel has perfect location.
