Straddling two deserts in California, Joshua Tree National Park is fabulously unique, with distinctive hiking, rock-climbing, and chances to see the namesake Joshua tree. (It is actually not a tree, but a yucca plant.) When booking a place to stay near Joshua Tree, you can choose from campgrounds, a variety of quirky motels and vacation rentals, and a select number of traditional hotels. Even so, expect at least a 20-mile drive to the park. Here are the best hotels near Joshua Tree National Park that balance proximity with the comforts of classic hotel amenities.
Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott Twentynine Palms-Joshua Tree National Park (6333 Encelia Ave.; 760-361-5000) Twentynine Palms
“Easy access to the visitor center and the park itself, and close to shops and restaurants,” writes a Tripadvisor user of this 80-room Fairfield Inn about 20 miles from Joshua Tree National Park. Rates include free breakfast, but as the same user points out, parking is not free: “Charging for parking in a hotel located in the middle of the desert was a bit rich.” A Google reviewer likes the creature comforts: “The outdoor pool was great for the kids. Complimentary breakfast in the morning is always appreciated. Clean, large suites and nice bath products with a lavender and eucalyptus scent.” >> Book this hotel for less

Afar likes that “the midcentury-modern inspired clubhouse has a café with organic comfort food and local California beer and wine, firepits (perfect for those cold desert nights), and a plunge pool.” A Google reviewer writes that the Airstreams are “very comfortable for a family of four—very roomy bathroom, and beds are great. Heated pool is nice and good to have granola and coffee offered for breakfast. Around five minutes from the entrance of Joshua Tree National Park.” >> Book this hotel for less
