Sprawling across 800,000 acres of West Texas, Big Bend National Park is as diverse as it is remote. Comprised of stretches of the Chihuahuan Desert, the Chisos Mountains, and the waters of the Rio Grande, the park is also home to hundreds of species of plants and wildlife and offers spectacular stargazing. The wide-open spaces in this area create a challenge, though. There is only one hotel within the park, along with a few campgrounds, and most towns with hotels are at least 20 miles away. Even so, you can find some great places to stay in the general area that offer access to more sights such as Big Bend Ranch State Park and the artists’ town of Marfa. Here are the best hotels near Big Bend National Park.
Chisos Mountains Lodge (Rural Station, 1 Basin Jct; 432-477-2291) Big Bend National Park
With 72 rooms—including a handful of cabins built by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Depression—this is the only non-camping lodging inside Big Bend. “It’s in the heart of the park, with quick access to food, gifts, trails, and general supplies,” writes a Google reviewer. “The rooms are a bit spartan, but the views and park itself makes up for just about everything.” Amenities include wi-fi in the gift shop and an on-site restaurant. “You can’t beat the location,” writes a Tripadvisor user. “5,000 feet up in a beautiful mountain setting. We enjoyed the pool and the hotel’s 12 Gage restaurant and V6 coffee.” A Google reviewer adds that the Marathon area has a good amount of “wonderful food establishments well-prepared foods. Shopping is minimal but sort of fits the remote setting.”
Hotel Saint George (105 S Highland Ave.; 432-729-3700) Marfa
While it’s nearly 100 miles from the national park, the artists’ town of Marfa is another top spot to visit in this part of West Texas. “Built in a converted a 1930 low-slung stucco building, this hotel is more than a full-service stay,” writes Condé Nast Traveler. “The hotel’s art collection is sure to get people talking: Nearly 300 works by regional artists, including pieces in all 55 guest rooms. It’s also home to LaVenture restaurant, which serves French-inspired dishes.” One Google reviewer calls it “an oasis in the desert after spending a few days down at Big Bend.
