At 40 miles long, St. Croix is geographically the largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, but to many travelers it does not feel “big”—in a good way. While you won’t find many brand name resorts here, you will find a wealth of fascinating history as well as thriving distilleries and vivid snorkeling and diving (don’t miss a trip to the Buck Island Reef National Monument). Here are the best hotels in St. Croix.

The Buccaneer Resort (5007 Estate; 800-255-3881) Christiansted

This 138-room, 1947 resort has serious history, built out of a sugar plantation estate founded by the Knights of Malta in 1653. Today, the updated Buccaneer “truly has it all,” writes Travel+Leisure—“a stunning 18-hole championship golf course, modern tennis facilities, a full-service spa, multiple dining options, three beaches, and an array of water sports equipment.” A Google reviewer writes that it’s “like a luxury bubble. The bartending staff was top notch, and there are two pools and three restaurants to choose from. There is also plenty to do on the island—go tour nearby Christiansted and go on a snorkeling tour to Buck Island.” >> Book this hotel for less

King Christian Hotel (1102 King’s Wharf VI; 340-773-6330) Christiansted

This 74-room boutique hotel is set on an 18th-century property along the Christiansted waterfront but “offers guests modern amenities, chic tropical-influenced decor, and the convenience of being right downtown,” writes Travel+Leisure. “While guests can spend their days lounging by the infinity pool, the hotel has also become a favorite of the local crowd thanks to a lively bar, a Mexican restaurant facing the waterfront, and an ice cream shop.” One Google reviewer comments that “it’s a great location on the boardwalk with lots of shopping and restaurants within close walking distance.” >> Book this hotel for less

Tamarind Reef Resort Spa and Marina (Tamarind Reef, 5001; 340-718-4455) Christiansted

This small hotel only has 40 rooms but still has a pool, tennis courts, and a spa. It offers “simple rooms and an amazing snorkeling experience,” writes one Google reviewer. “The hotel is on an amazing piece of land right off the beach with amazing ocean views.” Some online reviewers point out the beach tends to be rocky, rather than soft sand, but many also agree that the hotel is a good value and a mellow location. “I went to the beach daily and enjoyed the beautiful views of Green Cay and Buck Island,” writes a Tripadvisor user. “I enjoyed sitting on the back porch watching the sunset and listening to the waves after my day of hiking on the island.” >> Book this hotel for less

Carambola Beach Resort (Estate Davis Bay; 340-778-3800) North Side

Located on St. Croix’s north side, this resort affiliated with Marriott offers an outdoor pool and nearby tide-pooling. “Days here are as easily filled with hammock-lounging and relaxing by the pool or on the beach,” writes US News & World Report. “Those looking for a bit of activity can hit the gym or play a round of golf at the prestigious Carambola Golf Course, about three miles south of the resort.” A Google reviewer writes that “we had a beachfront villa and could hear the ocean all day. The food options on site are limited and there aren’t too many options close by so if you want good food you will have to leave the resort. If you are looking for a quiet spot to just take in the views and relax, this was great.” >> Book this hotel for less

Oceans at Divi Carina Bay Resort & Casino (5025 Turner Hole Rd.; 340-773-9700) Christiansted

Set along the east end of the island, this all-inclusive, adults-only resort has two pools, a casino and beach access. “Facilities were a bit dated,” writes a Triadvisor user, “but staff was amazing. I thought for the price it was a good value.” A Google reviewer writes that it’s a “great resort if you want to be away from the cruise ship crowds. Room was beautiful with a great balcony and ocean view. Food was not five-star but not horrible either.” >> Book this hotel for less
