Architecture, art, and incredible cuisine. The central Mexico town of San Miguel de Allende has so much 16th century Colonial-era history and preserved beauty that UNESCO has designated it a World Heritage City. No surprise, this is a city of small boutique hotels rather than big resorts, but you can still find incredible luxury, charm, and world class-amenities in the heart of town. Here are five great hotels in San Miguel de Allende.
Rosewood San Miguel de Allende (Nemesio Diez 11; 52-415-152-9700) San Miguel de Allende
This 67-room luxury hotel set in a 16th century building is “modeled after a grand hacienda,” writes Travel+Leisure. “The property is home to one of the city’s most popular rooftops—Luna Rooftop, which overlooks the city’s iconic La Parroquia.” The hotel has a spa and multiple pools and is a short walk from San Miguel’s central plaza. “Walking into the Rosewood is like stepping back in time,” writes a Tripadvisor user. “Every space is beautiful, both indoors and outdoors. The pool is gorgeous—we enjoyed the cabanas—and the breakfast was one of the best I have had.” >> Book this hotel for less
Numu Boutique Hotel San Miguel de Allende – The Unbound Collection by Hyatt (Nemesio Diez 20; 52-415-197-9390) San Miguel de Allende
“Lovely location, walking distance from the square,” writes a Google user of this 44-room Hyatt boutique hotel with a spa and rooftop pool. “Stores and restaurants are nearby. We split our honeymoon between Numu and a Hyatt in Mexico City and Numu took the cake.” A Tripadvisor user says that it “exceeded my expectations! Brilliant service and beautiful décor. The room had everything we needed. The robe was so good, I bought one to take home—short-sleeved and the perfect weight.” >> Book this hotel for less
Live Aqua San Miguel de Allende (Calz. De La Presa No. 85; 52-415-150-2300) San Miguel de Allende
U.S. News & World Report likes that this 153-room hotel—the largest in town—“offers luxury digs slightly removed from the bustle of the city” with “stunning artwork and modern finishes mixed with the Baroque Spanish architecture the city is known for.” Amenities include a tequila-and-cigar lounge and a fine-dining restaurant helmed by celebrity chef Eduardo Palazuelos. A Tripadvisor user calls it “a true gem. We were concerned that it was slightly out of town, however, the 10- to 15-minute walk into town was part of the charm. It was also super easy to take an Uber and less than $5. Highly recommend that you get the Sundeck Suite category room. Well worth the upgraded price. The views, private patio with daybed and access to the pool was invaluable.” >> Book this hotel for less
Hotel Matilda (Aldama 53; 52-415-152-1015) San Miguel de Allende
This 43-room boutique hotel with a spa, infinity pool and a sundeck is located a block north of Juarez Park. The Matilda “breaks the mold of San Miguel de Allende hotels,” writes U.S. News & World Report. “While other luxury mainstays highlight the city’s history by dressing their rooms in colonial-style decor, Matilda showcases contemporary art and chic interior design.” A Tripadvisor user declares that it “may be the best kept secret in San Miguel de Allende. The property is small but mighty in ambiance. The vibes were very chill and perfect to decompress after a day of exploring.” >> Book this hotel for less
