Sitting along the western coast of Italy, the city of Naples (Napoli in Italian) offers a wide range of culture—from its UNESCO-listed historic center to its culinary claim to fame as the birthplace of pizza. Whether you want to use Napoli as a launching pad to explore nearby Pompeii, Capri, or the Amalfi Coast—or just get your fill of local pizza—this makes a great spot for a vacation in Italy. Here are the best hotels in Naples.

Grand Hotel Vesuvio (Via Partenope, 45; 39-081-764-0044) Santa Lucia

Since its debut in 1882, this waterfront hotel has hosted the likes of Oscar Wilde, Pablo Picasso, and Igor Stravinsky. These days, the 160-room hotel is “immaculately preserved,” writes Condé Nast Traveler, reflecting “a time of white-glove service, red-carpeted ballrooms, gold silk brocade walls, and Murano chandeliers the size of cherry trees.” Along with a rooftop restaurant, the hotel has its own full-service spa. One Tripadvisor loves the “old-fashioned welcome” while another loves the location—“you can really walk to everything. There are also plentiful restaurants in the area that you can reach very foot and you can take ferries to Capri, Ischia, and Procida.” >> Book this hotel for less

Romeo Hotel – Naples (Via Cristoforo Colombo, 45; 39-081-017-5001) Centro Storico

This 79-room hotel overlooking Vesuvius “excels in the contemporary, art-driven spheres,” writes Condé Nast Traveler, thanks to its sleek design from Japanese architect Kenzo Tange, its restaurant helmed by multi-Michelin-star Alain Ducasse and “a private art collection of over 100 works, featuring pieces by Mario Schifano and Andy Warhol.” The hotel also has a spa and two outdoor pools. “An incredible stay,” writes a Google reviewer. “The rooms are spacious, modern, and comfortable. The location is a bit urban, but fantastic for walking to the port. We dined at their Michelin-starred restaurant every morning and it was truly exceptional. The eggs Benedict with the thinnest crispiest bacon was outstanding.” >> Book this hotel for less

Grand Hotel Parker’s (C.so Vittorio Emanuele, 135; 39-081-761-2474) Chiaia

Travel+Leisure writes that this “historic grand dame occupies a privileged position on a hill in the elegant Chiaia neighborhood, with sweeping views of the Bay of Naples and Vesuvius in the distance.” Amenities at the 1870 hotel include a two-Michelin star restaurant as well as another onsite restaurant and a rooftop lounge. “The views are stunning,” writes a Google reviewer. “It’s only a 25-minute walk to the Spanish Quarter and shopping district, and the amenities are terrific. Nothing beats sunset on the terrace bar. There are less expensive places to stay, but if you can swing it, do it.” >> Book this hotel for less

Grand Hotel Saint Lucia (Via Partenope, 46; 39-081-764-0666) Santa Lucia

This 88-room hotel not only looks out over the bay and Vesuvius but also the fortress Castel Dell’Ovo. A Tripadvisor user likes the hotel’s “first class service. Located near wonderful restaurants and street food as well as museums.” One Google reviewer calls it a “posh hotel by the sea—room was fabulous with beautiful views of the boats,” while another calls it “one of the last really classic hotels in Naples. It’s a short cab ride to the historic and bustling old city center.” >> Book this hotel for less

Palazzo Caracciolo Naples (Via Carbonara, 112; 39-081-016 0111) Centro Storico

This 145-room hotel, part of the Hilton brand, was created out of a 16th century palace. A Tripadvisor reviewer attests that it is still “as spacious and gracious as a palace, right in the heart of the city. Breakfast is described as continental but exceeded expectations—included scrambled eggs, bacon, and sausages as well as limitless pastries.” A Google reviewer loves the location: “perfect for exploring Naples on foot! It’s a 17-minute walk to Napoli Centrale station, 16 minutes to the National Archaeological Museum. Food options nearby were plentiful, especially with the hotel’s proximity to Napoli Piazza Garibaldi.” >> Book this hotel for less
