Located on Texas’ Gulf Coast just 20 miles from the Mexico border, South Padre Island has long been known as a classic spring break destination—but this barrier island town offers a lot more, too. This is a spot to lounge on the sand, play with the kids at the Schlitterbahn Waterpark, or do some serious birding. It also offers a lot of affordable lodging options. Here are the best hotels in South Padre Island, whether you’re coming for spring break, a family getaway, or just to relax.

Margaritaville Beach Resort South Padre Island (310 Padre Blvd.; 956-761-6551) South Padre Island

Enjoy a swim-up bar, a spa and two onsite restaurants at this 256-room resort that “will put you in a Margaritaville state of mind,” writes the Houston Chronicle. While the resort promises ocean views from all rooms, one Tripadvisor user points out that that usually means a “partial view of the ocean…the only full ocean front view are from the condos.” Even so, another user writes, “our room was clean and spacious, the staff was personable and helpful. And all with a Jimmy Buffett/Parrot-head motif and decor. The pool was exquisite, and the access to the beach was quite handy.” >> Book this hotel for less

Isla Grand Beach Resort (500 Padre Blvd.; 956-761-6511) South Padre Island

“Three words: private beach access,” writes the Houston Chronicle of this 10-acre resort that also has two swimming pools, sand volleyball courts, tennis courts, and an outdoor burger grill. “You won’t find traditional rooms here—that’s because there are three types of cabana rooms and two-bedroom condominiums that accommodate up to six people.” Online, some reviewers complain about nickel-and-diming. “Rooms are lovely. Location is perfect, right on the beach. But nothing is included in the very expensive price. No breakfast. It’s extra. Umbrellas, beach lounge chairs, pool towels … all extra.” >> Book this hotel for less

Holiday Inn Resort South Padre Island – On The Beach (100 Padre Blvd.; 956-426-9066) South Padre Island

“Super easy access to the beach,” writes a Google reviewer of this 221-room Holiday Inn resort with three pools, one of which has a swim-up bar. “Although there is no beach service, it’s easy to get food and drinks from the beachfront restaurant, as long as you bring your own cooler and you have patience.” A Tripadvisor user likes the“brand-new upscale lobby and a new kids’ game room. Overall a great value for the money.” >> Book this hotel for less

Hilton Garden Inn South Padre Island Beachfront (7010 Padre Blvd.; 956-761-8700) South Padre Island

“The oceanfront pool deck, which boasts excellent views of the shore, is the standout feature,” writes US News & World Report of this Hilton Garden Inn. The 156-room hotel also offers beach access and a pool—although a few online users complain that the pool isn’t heated, so could be “ice cold” depending on the time of your visit. A Tripadvisor user likes the quiet ambience, calling it “a nice hotel near the end of the road on the island. Parking was convenient and the hotel is situated near the beach. The pool area is nice and there is a full restaurant and bar along with a Starbucks. The rooms were roomy.” >> Book this hotel for less

Courtyard by Marriott South Padre Island (6700 Padre Blvd; 956- 433-0590) South Padre Island

“Saltwater pool, anyone?” writes the Houston Chronicle of this 224-room Courtyard that’s right next to the beach. “Take a dip in the saltwater pool or visit the fitness center to burn off the calories consumed from signature martinis at the resort’s beachfront Bar Louie.” A Google user raves about the “amazing location, great bar and restaurant. Awesome pool for the kids and private beach. The only issue on a full night could be parking—rollover parking is across the street. For less crowds, come in February.” >> Book this hotel for less
