Culture, wellness, and gorgeous beaches: Thailand’s Phuket offers a spectacular tropical island getaway. After all, Thailand’s largest island—located off the country’s west coast in the Andaman Sea—has 30 different bays and beaches, as well as a lively nightlife scene and easy access to the mountains and national parks. The wealth of hotel and resort options includes plenty of spa-centric spots right on the sand, too. Here are the best beach hotels on Phuket.
Amanpuri (Playa Pansea Cherngtalay; 66-76-324-333) Thalang District
Afar raves about this original Aman-brand hotel for its “timeless Thai-inspired design—all pointy roofs, fresh orchids, and polished teak—and its semi-private beach is still one of the prettiest you’ll find on the island.” The resort has 40 casita-style rooms and 44 villas, and is also home to an extensive spa and a gym with a Muay Thai boxing ring. A Google reviewer calls the resort “a tranquil oasis. The service is 10-star, the food is next level, the rooms are spacious with high ceilings and a great vibe. The beach is beautiful—clear water, soft sand. Loved the infrared sauna, stream and cold plunge.” >> Book this hotel for less
The Surin (118 Soi Hat Surin 8; 66-76-316-400) Thalang District
Sitting next door to Amanpuri, this 103-lodging resort shares both a beach and the same architect as its fancier neighbor. Condé Nast Traveler calls it a “long-standing classic that has garnered a loyal following for its well-priced rooms and outstanding service.” Room choices includes cottages, suites and villas, each with their own decks and some with their own plunge pools. A Tripadvisor user writes that “the swimming pool, black and hexagonal, is a masterpiece of style, like all the hotel’s buildings. The beach is the real added value: large, very clean and practically private, surrounded by lush palm trees. The short stretch of granite cliff to the north allows for good snorkeling.” >> Book this hotel for less
Phuket Marriott Resort & Spa, Merlin Beach (99 Muen-Ngoen Road; 66-76-335-300) Patong
This 414-room Marriott offers Thai ambience with lots of amenities: 11 restaurants, a beach, and three pools, including one geared toward families. “The location is great,” writes a Tripadvisor reviewer. “A quiet and private beach, but still pretty close to town. The three pools are quite big, so you can definitely find a spot. The restaurants are absolutely great.” A Google reviewer writes that it’s a “great hotel for families. Always lots going on. The beach at low tide is rocky, but still interesting.” >> Book this hotel for less
Rosewood Phuket (88/30-30, 88/28 Muen-Ngern Rd.; 66-76-356-888) Kathu District
“This hotel may be located within eyeshot of Patong Beach—the island’s rowdy epicenter—but it feels a world away,” writes Condé Nast Traveler of this hillside resort with 71 villas and suites. Lodgings “feel more like island homes, thanks to their cozy living spaces decorated with keepsakes, fresh flowers, and coffee table books.” The resort also has a destination-worthy spa, four restaurants, and a kids club. Some online users comment that getting to other restaurants is inconvenient, but this is a place to happily stay put. “It’s a great place for water activities, which are all free of charge and you don’t have to wait,” writes a Google reviewer. “For me, the best thing was the kids club. The staff are kind and the activities are well-organized.” >> Book this hotel for less
Anantara Mai Khao Phuket Villas (888 Moo 3, Mai Khao; 66-76-336-100) Thalang District
Located just 20 minutes from the airport, “you can be on your padded lounger within an hour of landing,” writes Condé Nast Traveler at “this long-standing Thai brand favorite” where “the majority of the resort is a lily-pad-dotted lagoon, filled with monitor lizards and flowers.” The resort is comprised of suites and villas, many with their own pools. “We had a three-bedroom suite for the nine of us,” writes a Tripadvisor User. “The rooms were clean and spacious. The breakfast buffet was excellent with lots of variety of foods. The resort had easy beach access and a beautiful pool.” >> Book this hotel for less
