Las Vegas minibar prices have been in the news for all the wrong reasons lately, from the $26 bottle of water at Aria hotel to the $50 charge for accidentally unplugging the minibar tray at Paris Las Vegas. It seems like a trend was brewing: The Las Vegas hotel minibar rip-off.
A viral Reddit post has ignited another firestorm, garnering more than 60,000 upvotes. The accompanying photo shows a note taped to a minibar fridge that reads: “This minibar is not for personal use and is sensory activated. A $50 per stay service fee will be applied for storing personal items or altering existing items within the minibar. Refrigerators for personal use are available for a daily fee. Please press the Guest Services button on your hotel phone for assistance.”
The comments are instructive. “Standard Vegas,” one commenter says. “Been that way for years. They’ve even wised up if you say you’re diabetic and need to chill your insulin. They give you a tiny fridge for that.” Another comment, which received 15,000 upvotes, was even blunter: “This is the kind of sh*t that’s killing Vegas…It really was a better city when the mob was running it.”
What should you do if you find yourself in a hotel with a sensor-activated minifridge? One commenter recommends pleading your case to the front desk. “We had this at the last hotel we stayed at. We went down to the front desk and said we weren’t paying for an extra fridge, we weren’t using anything from the minibar fridge, but we planned to rearrange things so we could store our food…The desk clerk was totally cool, and said that they reverse these charges all the time…The point is don’t let them get away with this sh*t. Tell them it sucks and you won’t pay.”
