Lisbon has Old World architecture, cobblestone streets, and rich history. But Portugal’s capital city also buzzes with energy and a thriving culinary scene. The “City of Light” captivates visitors with its fado music, classic custard tarts, and its best-kept-secret ambience. The best places to stay in Lisbon include palaces—some with epic views—that have found new life by way of sumptuous décor and modern amenities. Here are the best luxury hotels in Lisbon.
Hotel Tivoli Avenida Liberdade Lisboa (Av. da Liberdade 185; 351-21-319-8900) Avenida da Liberdade
You’ll be on “one of the most expensive avenues in the world” at one of the best hotels in Lisbon, according to Travel+Leisure. And you can also enjoy “an outdoor pool surrounded by a tropical garden and a chic rooftop bar with city views.” The location offers more than just views, too, says a Google user. “It is about a 5- to 10-minute walk to the heart of the tourist district… You’re still in a very busy area but it’s not in the very center of the tourist district. That means there are fewer restaurants. But I can’t emphasize how well run this hotel is.” >> Book this hotel for less
Four Seasons Hotel Ritz (R. Rodrigo da Fonseca 88; 351-21-381-1400) Eduardo VII Park
One of the most notable hotels in Lisbon is this grand dame hotel that Forbes says is “emblematic of the architecture of 1950s Portugal. Its art collection practically makes it a museum of modern art.” When you’re not looking at 1he 1,000-piece collection, the hotel also offers a great spa, an alfresco pool overlooking Eduardo VII Park, and regionally sourced gastronomic restaurant CURA. A Google reviewer raves about the attention to detail: “There were vegan options for food, and the staff all spoke perfect English. The floral decorations were extraordinary—flowers suspended from the high ceilings in exquisite containers. The pool was amazing.” >> Book this hotel for less
Valverde Hotel (Av. da Liberdade 164; 351-21-094-0300) Avenida da Liberdade
Luxury abounds at this 48-room Relais & Chateau property located on an especially elegant stretch of Avenida da Liberdade. “The hotel provided us with complimentary transfers to and from the airport and we were able to book the hotel chauffeur to give us a tour of the city,” says a Tripadvisor user. “For those hoping to visit the top tier luxury shops in Lisbon, the Valverde is the ideal spot—steps from Gucci, Prada, Louis Vuitton, etc.” Condé Nast Traveler likes the hotel for its “smiling and unstuffy” ambience, thanks to “vintage and contemporary artworks and restored mid-20th-century furniture,” as well as “elegant” rooms that feature “sumptuous velvet chairs and roll-top baths.” >> Book this hotel for less
The One Palácio da Anunciada (R. das Portas de Santo Antão 112 134, 1150-268 Av. Da Liberdade; 351-21-041-2300) Avenida da Liberdade
This 83-room hotel right off Avenida da Liberdade is housed in a 16th-century palace with plenty of 21st century conveniences. That means smart TVs and Nespresso machines, as well as a rooftop pool and a wine bar. US News & World Report likes that the hotel, which opened in 2019, “gives off an elegant feel” and “showcases historical touches,” such as the ceiling of hand-painted frescoes in the Condes de Ericeira Restaurant. Google reviewers love the location. “Walking distance to many of the best restaurants,” writes one, and “the spa is tiny but lovely.” One complains that the rooms are tiny, too: “No place to put or hang anything in the room.”
Olissippo Lapa Palace Hotel (Rua do Pau de Bandeira 4; 351-21-394-9494) Lapa Hill
Enjoy a rarefied perspective of Lisbon from this hilltop palace —the former home of a count—with its big views of the city and the Tagus River. Inside, according to Forbes Travel Guide, the hotel is “lavishly decorated in the traditional style of Portugal’s King João and Queen Maria. The antique-filled and marble-embellished interiors feel regal, yet are warm, inviting and comfortable.” One Tripadvisor user gives credit for “excellent staff, large rooms” and a “delicious, top of the line breakfast” but also says that the “location isn’t great. Expect to take a car to most tourist sites in Lisbon.” >> Book this hotel for less
