Live oaks dripping with Spanish moss, antebellum mansions and, of course, plenty of ghost stories. The Georgia town of Savannah exudes both romance and an air of mystery. Dotted with stately historic squares, this charming city also knows how to have a good time. It is famous for its wealth of bars, fun restaurants, in addition to hotels with rooftop lounges. To stay in the heart of the city, be sure to look for lodgings in or near its Historic District. Here are six stunning hotels in Savannah that offer both beautiful ambience as well as great access.

Hotel Bardo Savannah (700 Drayton St.; 912-238-5158) Historic District

One of the most anticipated hotel openings of 2024, the Bardo garners raves. “Savannah is known for its antebellum architecture, Southern hospitality, and fabled ghosts. And now, there’s a luxury resort that channels all three,” says Travel+Leisure. The hotel occupies a Southern Gothic terracotta mansion on Forsyth Park, a 30-acre village green surrounded by historic homes and Spanish moss–draped oak trees. “The room was comfortable with a magnificent view of Forsyth Park,” says one Google reviewer. “Hotel Bardo exceeded all of my expectations! The hotel’s ambiance is simply stunning, with elegant decor and charming Southern touches throughout.”    >> Book this hotel for less

Perry Lane Hotel (256 E. Perry St.; 912-415-9000) Historic District

Set in two buildings by Chippewa Square, this 167-room boutique hotel has an elegant library downstairs in addition to a hip rooftop pool upstairs. “The solidly modern decor and the splendid integration of outdoor and indoor spaces give the guests the sense of a much larger hotel,” says Forbes. Online reviewers love the personable service. “Close to everything, clean, and the best customer service,” says one Tripadvisor user, noting that one staffer kept their Champagne glasses happily full during a rainy afternoon. “Hard to find such a great combination.”    >> Book this hotel for less

The Drayton Hotel (7 Drayton St.; 912-662-8900) Historic District

The 19th century building that houses one of the finest boutique hotels in Savannah looks pretty old-school, but the interiors are nicely modern: Rooms have hardwood floors, smart TVs and Bluetooth speakers. In the lobby, “bright blue sofas and light wood paneling create a whimsical space that’s as welcoming as it is colorful,” says Condé Nast Traveler. “As one of the newer hotels in the city, The Drayton is already making waves with its aesthetics.” It doesn’t feel exclusive, either. “This hotel would be a delight at any price, but it was exceptional given how affordable it was,” says a Tripadvisor user. “It was nice to stay in a small downtown hotel without any of the big corporate hotel feel.”    >> Book this hotel for less

JW Marriott Savannah Plant Riverside District (400 W. River St.; 912-373-9100) Riverfront

Housed in a former power plant, this 419-room JW Marriott hotel is enormous but still oozes with character. “This place is huge,” says Condé Nast Traveler. “It’s fitting that there are dinosaur replicas towering over the lobby—the place was a fossil fuel plant and plays to this theme in the decor. It feels like it could be a museum masquerading as a hotel.” Travelers loved exploring the various displays and the easy access to the rest of town. “We had our own private balcony,” says one Google reviewer. “So many restaurants and places to walk to nearby. Loved being right on the water and being able to see the ships go by.”    >> Book this hotel for less

The Bohemian Hotel Savannah Riverfront, (102 W. Bay St.; 912-721-3800) Riverfront

Set along the riverfront, this hotel from Marriott’s Autograph Collection creates a distinctive ambience. “The playful, eclectic feel suggests the interior of a historic boat,” says Travel+Leisure, “with old hardwood floors and columns, as well as driftwood sculptures that look as if they could be artifacts from nearby docks.” The magazine calls rooms “wonderfully decadent” thanks to the “oversize wooden headboards and chandeliers made with oyster shells.” But one Google reviewer points out that décor is not everything: “River views are great. Rooms have beautiful furnishings, but no microwave or fridge.” Even if you don’t stay here, do brunch at The Rocks on the River restaurant, a local favorite.    >> Book this hotel for less
